Attention Angeleno’s: Metro Red Line Extends Hours until 3 a.m. on Weekends for the Holiday Season

So if you are an Angeleno (person who lives in LA) you should know that starting this weekend (November 21, 2008) and through the last weekend in December (December 27), the Metro Red line will run until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.  And of course, the metro already runs an all-night service on New Year’s Eve, so you have thirteen nights of late night options.

I know, LA is a car city, but my hopes is that it will become more and more mass transit friendly. You can take the bus anywhere, though it generally takes more time, and the metro is continually expanding, as you can see from the map above.

But if you live near the red line (which I do) – I live right by Hollywood and Western – then please take advantage of the late night red line over the next couple of weekends. Basically, according to one of the LA Times blogs – the Bottleneck Blog – “A group of prominent Los Angeles area businesses have anteed up $54,250 to extend late-night weekend subway service on the Red Line from North Hollywood to Union Station this holiday season, allowing thousands working at or enjoying shops, restaurants and entertainment venues to stay out a little later on Friday and Saturday nights or use public transportation on their way to and from late night shifts.”

If you want to learn more about Blogdowntown has a nice write up about it as well.  From what I understand, if there is good ridership during this period of time, there may be an extension of hours in the future.

I did not know LA had a metro…do you find it fascinating and even a little encouraging that local businesses are helping to fund the extended service?
