From Sundance – Part II
I’m hoping to post a few film reviews soon, but in the mean time, in the midst of a crazy busy schedule, I wanted to post a few photos and just give you a general sense of what I’ve been up to since my last posting. The Windrider Film Forum has been excellent. This is a forum within the festival where filmmakers and budding theologians gather to hear from Craig Detweiler, sometimes watch some unique short films, and this morning we had the chance to dialogue with Caroline Briggs the screen writer of Higher Ground the best film I’ve seen, up to this point.

This day was all about the story behind the financial crises. I saw The Flaw, a UK documentary on the financial crises and found it stimulating, educational, with some fascinating insights I will write about when I review the film. During the day I walked down main street just meeting people and connecting with the vibe of the festival. In the evening, I was able to get into the premier Margin Call, which was a humanizing but realistic look at the key players in an investment firm during the early stages of the 2008 financial crises. The stellar cast which included Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and others were all present for a Q & A after the film. It was the first time any of the cast saw the film as well.

This day got me thinking about the interconnectedness of the world, connection with God and how our choices effect others. Connected: The Autoblogography of Love, Death and Technology helped make the case that as John Muir has said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world”. The day was full of unique connections and the evening was an amazing experiencing watching Higher Ground. I look forward to writing a post about the film when I have the chance. The essence of the film is we journey with Corrine who has a conversion experience and becomes part of a fundamentalist Christian group. This group is portrayed with honesty. It is a loving community whose approach to scripture is a bit wooden. So while they are sincere people, their hermeneutical approach develops a culture that tends to stifle those who genuinely question their faith. There is not much space to explore deeper understanding of significant issues.

I look forward to writing more later. Gotta head to my next film.
