Attitude Check – Part I
I was speaking at a conference near Denver, Colorado and I needed a ride to the airport very early in the morning and a bunch of guys at the conference who were looking to start a church that year decided to take me to the Denver Airport. These were a bunch of people who were very hungry and eager to learn. In the midst of getting some input from me on their new church plant they asked me a very interesting question. They said, “JR, what are some of the biggest lessons that you have learned in your Christian life.” That was a pretty big question to answer at 5 a.m. in the morning.
But one of the top 10 lessons I have learned that I shared with them that morning, I wanted to share with you, because I think it is vital to living a life of faith. It deals with our attitude. It is a lesson we must learn if we want to live a life pleasing to God and be a blessing to others.
I will tell you the lesson I learned in a moment, but what do I mean when I use the word attitude? Attitude is the way in which you approach life. Attitude is your inward thoughts and feelings that affect your outward behavior. That is why your attitude can be seen without speaking a word. Someone can cop a bad attitude, or have a good attitude.
But our attitude is so important because it affects everything about our life. That is why the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Ephesus, “Live no longer as the ungodly do, for they are hopelessly confused… throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness- righteous, holy and true.”
God through Paul tells us that we need to get new attitude. Why, because our attitude affects everything in our life. That is why we need to take times to have an attitude check. Why should we regularly check our attitude? In my next post I will share the first of four reasons.
