Equipping God's People to Create Missional Culture

Statement of Faith Project – Part 5

I’m continuing to share my first attempt to draft a statement of faith with a broad evangelical posture.  This project was started from a commission to write a statement for a particular organization, and to do so within particular parameters.  This has shaped my approach deeply.

Thanks for the interaction on my previous posts, on the Triune God, scripture, humanity and the Gospel.  I appreciate your feedback on each of these entries, because it will help the final version be that much better!  Here is my concise statement about Jesus.

Jesus Christ
Jesus is the Son of God, God the Son, Savior and Lord of the Universe, who was born of a virgin and exists co-eternally with the Father and Spirit. He is fully God and fully human. His mission was to inaugurate the kingdom of God on earth and he calls us to follow him in the renewal of all things. His creed was to love God and people, especially the least of these. His grace is extended to us in many ways. Through his incarnation, he is our priest and can identify with our weaknesses. Through his perfect sinless life, he demonstrates the way we ought to live, with the help of God’s Spirit. Through his self-sacrificial death on the cross, he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Through his resurrection and ascension he gives us power through the Spirit to live godly missional lives. Through his return, he gives us hope of a new heavens and a new earth.

  1. I would try to make all the “was” statements to “is” statements, as they can be present, active tense.

Revealing my own theological leanings, I would would included some reference to Body theology, perhaps referencing the Eucharist. However, I know it could get off track.

Bravo, mon ami!! Excepto….”His creed was to love God and people, especially the least of these” The verse there is no partiality with God came to mind as I thought of that phrase esp the least of these….I wish “esp” was true but there is no difference period in who and how much He loves us…perhaps your heart cry could be best expressed by He lived different than what was common in His culture to pave the way that there is no distinction in God’s kingdom as to whom He loves….Just a thought…This one flowed very well and it’s exciting to see scripture interwoven into your thoughts….a sign that you hide it in your heart.I am sure God likes us quoting Him :) Going to copy and paste the ones you have done so far to read together…It was fun to get a wake up call from this tweet this morning only to have it say we are talking about Jesus today…get up Arlene and follow …:)
